Threaded Fasteners Tighten Up
The Southeastern Conference has decided on a 10-game conference-only schedule. That means the end to some long-running rivalries such as Georgia-Georgia Tech and Florida-Florida State.
But it also has major implications for Group of Five teams, including South Alabama. The Jaguars were scheduled to play in the Swamp this season against Florida.
Without that game the Jaguars lose a chance pull a major upset like the one they produced to open the 2016 season at Mississippi State. But, just as importantly, it looks like they won’t have that big paycheck that these money games bring.
If they follow through with their plan, the SEC will contend that these games were canceled because of events outside their controls. That’s a hard sell when conference games are still scheduled to be played.
The SEC needs to Tighten Up and live up to its obligation to these programs that count on their paydays to survive.
