Threaded Fasteners Nuts and Bolts of the Game
If three of the Power 5 conferences play football this fall can we really crown a legitimate national champion?
On the surface it’s a reasonable question. But closer inspection shows the champion would probably be the same whether the Big Ten and Pac-12 are in the running or not.
Going back 22 years to the beginning of the BCS title game, there have been only three championships won by teams from those conferences – two by Ohio State and one that has since been vacated by USC.
During that period, the SEC has had championship teams from Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Tennessee and Florida. Current ACC members Clemson, Florida State and Miami have reached the top. Even the Big 12 has two winners in Oklahoma and Texas.
Yes, Ohio State has a great program. But college football can still do a pretty good job of crowning the country’s best team without the participation of the Big Ten and Pac-12.
