Threaded Fasteners Tighten Up
Have you ever seen an in-game infraction that was so shocking and inappropriate that you thought an actual crime had been committed?
The most infamous example of this may be the sucker punch absorbed by NBA All-Star Rudy Tomjanovich. The injuries suffered by the Houston Rockets forward when punched by Laker Kermit Washington were so severe that they were life-threatening. For fracturing Tomjanovich’s skull, Washington was fined $10,000 and suspended 60 days by the NBA. But there was no involvement from law enforcement.
That was not the case after a frightening and appalling incident last weekend.
A high school defensive lineman in Texas was standing on the sideline when the referee announced that the player had been ejected from the game following an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. The player, 18-year-old Emmanuel Duron, came charging onto the field and blindsided the unsuspecting official.
The referee was treated for a possible concussion and shoulder injury.
The school forfeited the rest of its season.
And Duron was charged with assault and taken to jail. A judge set his bail at $10,000.
The arrest was the right call. Duron may never Tighten Up, but he should pay for his out-of-control behavior.
