Someone in the SEC needs to step up to challenge Kentucky

On the Threaded Fasteners Tighten Up segment Monday morning Creg Stephenson and I discussed the fans who mistook Garth Brooks' Sanders 20 jersey as an endorsement of Bernie Sanders instead of Barry Sanders.

We also dug into the state of SEC basketball compared to other conferences.

There’s a reason why the ACC continues to have the respect of college basketball fans and pundits despite a dismal season.

Duke and North Carolina have been and will continue to be the standard-bearers of the league. But Virginia is the reigning national champion. Florida State is currently the highest-ranked conference team. And North Carolina State has perhaps the most famous win in Final Four history.

That kind of balance is nowhere to be found in the SEC. Kentucky just won its 49th SEC championship in the 88-year history of the league. That’s 56 percent.

Coming in a not-so-close second is LSU with 11 titles.

The count is just as lopsided when it comes to the SEC Tournament. Kentucky obviously leads the way with 31 titles. Alabama is second with six.

Brief flurries of success from Florida, Arkansas and now Auburn are not enough to elevate the league as a whole. The SEC needs to Tighten Up and provide some real, consistent competition for Kentucky if it ever wishes to be considered on the same level with the ACC.
