Two Mobile football players sign lucrative NFL contracts

Two former Mobile high school football players signed lucrative NFL contract extensions with their current teams this week.

Quarterback AJ McCarron and safety Jimmie Ward avoided free agency by signing with their current teams. McCarron re-signed with the Houston Texas. His deal covers two years and pays a total of $4 million. Of that, $3.75 million is guaranteed.

McCarron was part of three national championships at Alabama and his second in the Heisman Trophy balloting. He played his high school football at St. Paul's Episcopal, where he led the Saints to the 2007 state championship as a junior.

Ward, who played at Davidson High School before moving on to North Illinois, re-signed with the San Francisco 49ers. His deal is for a total of $28.5 million over three years. Ward helped the 49ers to the Super Bowl last season.
