Alabama gunning to break the record for most NFL first-round picks

Here is my Threaded Fasteners Nuts and Bolts of the Game from Friday's show. It could be a historic draft for Alabama.

The record for the most first-round NFL picks in a single NFL draft from a single school is six by the Miami Hurricanes in 2004.

That draft started for the Hurricanes with Sean Taylor at No. 5 and ended with Vince Wilfork at No. 21. In between, there was Kellen Winslow II, Jonathan Vilma, D.J. Williams and Vernon Carey.

That means that all six Miami players were selected during a 17-pick span. Wow, now that’s dominating the draft.

Alabama has an outside chance to tie or even break the record this year. Here’s what we know for sure. Tua Tagovailoa, Jedrick Wills, Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs will all be selected in the first round.

That’s four. But there are four other Tide players who are showing up in the first round in mock drafts. And not just mocks from people in Scottsboro or Alabaster. We’re talking national writers and analysts who get bylines on NFL.com and airtime on the NFL Network.

Those players are Xavier McKinney, Trayvon Diggs, Raekwon Davis and Terrell Lewis. My guess is that only one of those four will be taken in the first round, giving the Tide a total of five.

But as players start coming off the board, it’s gonna be fun to see if Alabama can match that historic draft class of the Miami Hurricanes.
