Steve Spurrier still adding to his legend at 75

Threaded Fasteners Nuts and Bolts of the Game

Steve Spurrier, the Ole Ball Coach, turned 75 years old this week.

Of all the men who have coached football in the SEC he’s among the four best along the Bear Bryant, Nick Saban and Urban Meyer. You can decide where he ranks among those legends.

But there’s no disputing that Spurrier is the king of the quip. Even before he got to the SEC, he had the gift of gab. One year, when he was still the coach at Duke, he was asked who he thought the All-ACC quarterback would be. His response? I don’t know. I haven’t decided on a starter yet.

Spurrier reacted to Peyton Manning returning to Tennessee for his senior season by saying Manning probably wanted to be the first three-time Citrus Bowl MVP.

While coaching South Carolina he once said that he liked playing Georgia early in the season because he could always count on two or three Bulldog players being suspended for offseason transgressions.

Spurrier was always funny – unless you were on the receiving end of one of his jabs. Even then, you had to admit he was great for the game.

For Threaded Fasteners, I’m Randy Kennedy with Nuts and Bolts of the Game.
