Alabama draft class not an indication of the Tide underachieving

Threaded Fasteners Tighten Up

Twitter was made for people to be snarky I suppose. But for the criticism to really have any bite it has to be based in a larger truth.

That was not the case with this tweet from a national college football writer during Thursday’s NFL Draft first round.

“Alabama was the first team ever to have 4 of 1st 15 picks in the NFL Draft that also ended the season playing in the Citrus Bowl.”

It’s true that Alabama had four of the top 15 picks and that the Tide finished the season with a Citrus Bowl win over Michigan. But the snark is only clever if it illuminates a bigger point.

That point would be that Alabama has a bunch of talented underachievers. But that’s not true.

Tua Tagovailoa, Jedrick Wills, Henry Ruggs and Jerry Jeudy all played three years at Alabama. Their overall record was 38-4. Two of the four losses were to the team that won the national championship that year. They couldn’t lose to the national champions in the other year because they won it themselves.

Yes, they could have made the playoffs in all three years instead of just two. But missing the playoff because of a five-point loss to national champion LSU is certainly not cause for snickering.

For Threaded Fasteners, I’m Randy Kennedy with Tighten Up.
