Threaded Fasteners Tighten Up: UCF with odd uniform change for spring game

Remember when old-school coaches used to preach that the name on the front of the jersey was more important than the name on the back?

That’s a clever way of saying that the team is more important than the individuals who make up the team. The same still holds true today. But the team, in many cases, seems to be the players’ personal branding team.

Central Florida has unveiled its new football uniforms that are complete with each players’ Twitter handle printed on the nameplate.

This is a bad idea for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is that social media can be a cruel space when a player misses a winning field goal or throws an interception that loses a game.

To hear new UCF coach Gus Malzahn explain the importance of personal branding does bring a good chuckle.

But I’m afraid the unintended consequences of this idea are going to be more severe than the positive results the school desires.

Tighten Up, Central Florida.
