Threaded Fasteners Nuts and Bolts of the Game
In an effort to bring more geographic diversity to college football, we are on the verge of a 12-team playoff starting in 2023.
The new system might accomplish the goal. But it’s certainly not going to do anything to diminish the importance of the SEC.
In fact, the new system will simply provide another opportunity for the league to flex its muscles.
A study of the last 10 college football seasons shows that if this 12-team playoff system had been in place the SEC would have flourished. Alabama would have led the country with nine playoff appearances. But teams like Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Missouri and South Carolina would have also made appearances.
In fact, among SEC schools, only Vanderbilt, Kentucky and Tennessee would have been left out.
It will be good to get some teams from the West Coast and from the Group of 5 conferences into the party. But don’t be fooled into thinking the dominance of the SEC is going to be diminished. Just the opposite is about to happen.
