Threaded Fasteners Tighten Up: FSU with questionable late-game play calling

Florida State trailed Clemson 24-20 with 1:36 left in the game Saturday. But the Seminoles had the ball with a chance to score the winning touchdown.

You make the call: Should they pass deep? Run a screen? Run the ball? The answer was none of the above.

With 96 seconds left in the game, the Seminoles punted on fourth-and-32 from their own 17.

The strategy worked as perfectly as it could, in that Clemson gained no yards and punted it back to FSU. But by that point, Florida State had to cover 91 yards in 23. That meant the Seminoles had to try some ridiculous play with multiple laterals that ended in a Clemson touchdown on the last play of the game.

FSU wasn’t likely going to convert fourth-and-32. But there was a better chance of that than going 91 yards in nine seconds.

Deciding to punt basically conceded the game. The way this season is going for the Seminoles, they need to Tighten Up and take advantage of every chance they get.
