If you’re an underdog team with clearly less talent, the idea should be to stay close for as long as possible then hope the favored team starts to feel the pressure.
But neither underdog coach got that message last Friday.
Both Cincinnati and Michigan won the toss against Alabama and Georgia. Both elected to defer to the second half, meaning they were choosing to start the game on defense.
The result was an opening-drive touchdown for the Tide and Bulldogs. As it turned out, that was all the points either team needed to take control and advance to the championship game.
I’m not saying the result of the games would have been different. I do know Cincinnati would have at least taken a 3-0 lead.
That bit of hope would have been more than the underdogs actually experienced.
