The closest teams to Mobile to win a state high school basketball championship this year reside in Enterprise 151 miles away and Prattville 165 from here.
Considering almost nobody in Mobile has ever been to Enterprise or ever heard of Prattville Christian, that’s a bad sign for basketball in these parts.
It’s an awesome accomplishment for any team to make the state final four. But that doesn’t change the fact that our teams went 1-7 in Birmingham last week.
There are great players and coaches in Mobile. But that hasn’t translated to any sustained success on the statewide level.
Maybe next year that trend will finally be reversed.
