Hurricane Ida Makes Landfall At Port Fourchon With 150 mph Winds

Hurricane Ida made landfall this morning at 11:55am as an extremely dangerous category 4 hurricane near Port Fourchon, Louisiana, about 100 miles south of New Orleans.  Ida's maximum sustained winds at landfall were 150 mph.

Ida is striking the state on the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards says his state is getting ready to face a big challenge with Hurricane Ida making landfall. He made his comments on CNN's State of the Union. Governor Edwards added the worst possible situation for Louisiana is if the storm stalls and doesn't continue its trajectory as projected. The governor said he believes the state's levees are designed to survive damage from a powerful storm like this. Edwards noted there have been more evacuations than normal and he hopes that will lead to fewer storm-related deaths. He added that anyone who stayed will have to survive through the first 72 hours after landfall, but the state has a large number of search and rescue teams ready to go.
