Florida State lost its season opener for a fourth straight year on Saturday, this time to a conference foe that is the ACC’s answer to Vanderbilt.

But, because of a PR misstep at a rival state school, the Seminoles are not on the receiving end of all the jokes this week.

On Saturday there was a report of smoke coming from Florida’s Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

The initial word from the University of Florida was that a dumpster inside the stadium caught fire. That’s right, Florida football is officially a dumpster fire.

Look, I’m not advocating for public universities to lie to the public and the press. But no harm would have been done by simply saying the fire was contained within a portable structure and no damage was done to the actual stadium.

Later it was reported that a golf cart fire inside the stadium was the reason for the smoke. That story could be true, but it was too late.

Tighten Up Gators and let the Seminoles garner all the ridicule they’ve earned again this season.
